Nutrition

Nutrition covers feeding the herd end to end: a feed plan per nutritional group defines how much each cow eats — fixed per head, per milk produced, or ad libitum — daily consumption gets registered by hand (with a button that prefills it on its own) or with one click from the milking grid. Every animal's nutritional group is computed on its own from her state, never picked by hand. Cost and efficiency reports per period, plus a "Performance" tab on every animal that compares her real consumption against her group's estimate.

Terms

Feed plan
A nutritional group's feeding recipe: one or more ration lines, each with a feed and a ration type. Only one plan can be active per nutritional group at a time — changing a group's formula means editing its active plan, not creating a new one alongside it.Where it appears: Dashboard → Nutrition → Plans
Nutritional group
Calves, heifers, lactating, dry or pre-calving — computed on its own from each animal's state (age, gender, whether she is lactating, whether she has a pregnancy with a near expected calving date) and never stored by hand or forced. Lactating always wins over any other state; pre-calving overrides dry or heifer but never lactating.Where it appears: Dashboard → Nutrition → Plans
Fixed per head
A fixed amount of feed per head per day, no matter how much milk the animal gives or doesn't — the simplest ration shape, typical for calves or a pre-calving plan.Where it appears: Dashboard → Nutrition → Plans
Per liter of milk produced
An amount of feed proportional to the liters a cow gives, with a minimum daily amount per head that never drops below — so a cow giving little milk still gets a feed baseline. It's the farm's real formula: for every 3 liters of milk, 1 kilogram of feed is given, with a floor of 5 kilograms a day split across that day's milkings.Where it appears: Dashboard → Nutrition → Plans
See full explanation
  • Quantity per milk = 1 (1 kilogram of feed)
  • Liters per unit = 3 (for every 3 liters of milk)
  • Minimum daily = 5 kg (no cow gets less, even if she gives little milk)
  • Example: a cow giving 18 L/day gets 6 kg (18 ÷ 3); one giving 9 L/day gets the 5 kg minimum, not 3 kg
Ad libitum
An informational plan line, with no quantity, no inventory draw and no cost — for forage or pasture that's always available and not worth measuring serving by serving. It shows up on the plan as a reminder, but takes no part in the milking-grid suggestion or in daily consumption.Where it appears: Dashboard → Nutrition → Plans
Daily consumption
The real record of what a group or an animal ate on a day — per individual cow for lactating and pre-calving, per whole group (with the headcount present captured) for calves, heifers and dry cows. Saving a consumption draws each feed down from inventory; the "Prefill" button fills the form with the suggested ration from the active plan, editable before saving.Where it appears: Dashboard → Nutrition → Consumption
Suggested feed at milking
A column in the milking grid that shows, for every lactating cow, how much feed she is due based on the active plan — per-milk lines use her milk history from the last 7 days; fixed per-head rations need no history — split across the farm's configured daily milkings. It is only a suggestion shown on screen: it stays unsaved until it is registered.Where it appears: Dashboard → Milking → Milking grid
Register feed servings (idempotent per session)
The milking grid's "Register feed servings" button creates a daily consumption in one click for every eligible cow in that session, with exactly the amount the suggested column showed at that moment. A cow can be excluded before registering (for example, if she already ate through another path). Retrying the same session's registration never duplicates: any cow already registered for that session is skipped, and only what was still missing gets completed.Where it appears: Dashboard → Milking → Milking grid
Cost and efficiency reports
Two reports over the same period, grouped by day, week or month: feed cost (per nutritional group, with cost per head-day and a per-feed breakdown) and feed efficiency (liters of milk produced per kilogram of feed consumed, lactating cows only). Both are computed from daily consumption already registered, never from the milking-grid suggestion.Where it appears: Dashboard → Nutrition → Reports
Performance tab
On each animal's detail page, compares her real registered feed cost in the period against an estimate based on her current nutritional group's consumption over that same period — two numbers side by side, neither made up: if the animal has no nutritional group (for example, an adult male), both estimates come back empty instead of an error.Where it appears: Dashboard → Animals → [animal detail] → Performance
Nutrition permissions
Viewing plans, consumption and reports requires the nutrition read permission; creating or editing plans and registering consumption (by hand or from milking) additionally requires the write permission. The Viewer and Veterinarian roles can only look; Owner, Manager and Worker can also register and edit. The Accountant does not see Nutrition. Without the finance permission, feed costs do not appear (see Team and roles).Where it appears: Dashboard → Nutrition (all three tabs)

Flows

Creating a plan with the farm's formula

  1. Pick the group and the ration type

Group "Lactating" → add a ration line "Per liter of milk produced"

  2. Enter the formula: 1 kg for every 3 liters

Quantity per milk = 1, liters per unit = 3

  3. Set the daily minimum: 5 kg

No cow gets less, even if she gives little milk

  4. Save

The plan goes active for the group; that amount splits itself across the day's milkings

Registering daily consumption

  1. Pick a group (or animal) and a date

Per cow for lactating and pre-calving; per whole group for calves, heifers and dry cows

  2. Prefill

Fills the suggested ration from the active plan and the period's real liters

  3. Review and adjust

Edit quantities if actual feeding differed from the suggestion

  4. Save — inventory draws down on its own

Each line draws its feed down from inventory; stock can go negative, it never blocks

Registering feed from milking

  1. See the "Suggested feed" column

Every cow shows what she is due based on the active plan (per-milk lines use her 7-day history; fixed lines need none)

  2. Exclude a cow if it does not apply

For example, a cow that already ate through another path that day

  3. Register feed servings

One click registers exactly what the grid showed, for every eligible cow

  4. Retry without duplicating

If the session was already registered, only what was missing gets completed

Frequently asked questions

Why does the feed suggestion use the 7-day history instead of the liters I just typed today?

Because at suggestion time it's not yet known how much the cow will give at that milking — the suggestion is computed before or during milking, using the average daily liters from the last 7 days as the best estimate available. Today's liters are only complete once the session is done being logged.

What happens if there isn't enough stock of the feed being registered?

Registration is never blocked. The consumption saves anyway and that feed's inventory can go negative — the same rule that governs the farm's whole inventory: a stock discrepancy gets corrected later, it never stops recording what was actually fed.

Why does a feed's cost sometimes show as "—" in the reports?

Because that feed has no priced purchase recorded in inventory yet — with no known unit cost, the report shows "—" instead of making up a zero. Once a priced purchase is registered, later reports go back to computing cost normally.

Who picks an animal's nutritional group?

Nobody picks it by hand: it is computed on its own from the animal's state (age, gender, whether she is lactating, whether she has a pregnancy with a near expected calving date) whenever it's needed. Lactating always wins over any other state.

Can I have two active plans for the same nutritional group?

No. Only one plan can be active per nutritional group per farm at a time — changing a group's formula means editing its active plan instead of creating a new one alongside it.

What happens if I register feed from the same milking session twice?

It doesn't duplicate. Any cow already registered for that session is automatically skipped the second time; only the session's cows that still had no feed logged get registered.
