Reproduction and lactation

Mi Finca tracks two distinct, independent things: where the female is in the reproductive cycle, and whether or not she is being milked. They are two separate axes — and combining them is the norm.

Terms

Open
Empty female: no active service and no confirmed pregnancy. Available to be bred.Where it appears: Animals → reproductive status
Served (bred)
The cow was bred (natural service or artificial insemination) and is awaiting pregnancy confirmation, typically 30-60 days later by palpation or ultrasound. If she returns to heat, she goes back to "open".Where it appears: Animals → reproductive status
Pregnant
Pregnancy confirmed by palpation, ultrasound or non-return to heat.Where it appears: Animals → reproductive status
Milking (lactating)
The cow is being milked. It is independent of the reproductive status: for most of the gestation the cow keeps being milked.Where it appears: Animals → lactation status
Dry
Not being milked. The "dry-off" before calving (the final ~60 days of gestation) is the typical case: pregnant and dry at the same time.Where it appears: Animals → lactation status
Service
The act of breeding a female, either by natural mount or by artificial insemination. Recording it moves the female to "served". If it is an insemination and a straw from the inventory catalog is picked, one is deducted from the tank, dated on the service; a natural mount spends no straw.Where it appears: Animals → Reproduction
Natural service
Breeding performed directly by a bull. The bull is recorded as the sire of the potential offspring.Where it appears: Animals → Reproduction
Artificial insemination
Breeding via semen (straw) applied by a technician, without a direct mount. The semen source is recorded as the sire.Where it appears: Animals → Reproduction
Pregnancy check
Check (palpation or ultrasound) after the service. Positive result → the female becomes "pregnant"; negative → she goes back to "open".Where it appears: Animals → Reproduction
Calving
Birth of the calf. The cow starts lactating and her reproductive status returns to "open".Where it appears: Animals → Reproduction
Abortion
Loss of the pregnancy before calving. The cow returns to the "open" status.Where it appears: Animals → Reproduction
Dry-off
End of lactation, typically ~60 days before the expected calving, so the cow rests before giving birth.Where it appears: Animals → Reproduction
Sire
The male — or the semen source in artificial insemination — that performed the service.Where it appears: Animals → Reproduction
Dam
The female that was served; mother of the future offspring.Where it appears: Animals → Reproduction
Annul
Cancels a mistaken service or event. Annulling a service also annuls the events linked to it (a pregnancy check on a service that never happened means nothing) and returns any semen straw it drew to stock. Either way, Mi Finca recomputes the female’s reproductive and lactation status — and every service’s outcome — from what remains, so the record is never left pointing at a fact that no longer exists.Where it appears: Animals → Reproduction
Edit
Corrects a detail on an already-recorded service or event: its date and notes, and — for a service — the sire breed, semen code, genetic house, straw or technician; a calving also allows fixing the outcome and offspring count. What a row actually was (its type, the sire, the check result, which service an event belongs to) cannot be edited in place — that is undone with Annul and recorded again. Moving a date is only accepted when the corrected order of events still makes sense, and the female’s status is recomputed right after.Where it appears: Animals → Reproduction
Expected calving
Computed date: service date + gestation length for the species. It is the date that drives the calving alert on the calendar.Where it appears: Dashboard → Reproductive calendar
Dry-off due
60 days before the expected calving: the date when a lactating cow should be dried off so she rests before giving birth.Where it appears: Dashboard → Reproductive calendar
Return to heat
~21 days after a service (species-dependent). Worth checking whether the served female came back into heat — a sign she did not conceive.Where it appears: Dashboard → Reproductive calendar
Post-partum heat
~45 days after calving (voluntary waiting period). From this date on, the cow is ready to be bred again.Where it appears: Dashboard → Reproductive calendar
Alert window
How far ahead each alert appears: calvings at 60/30/7 days, dry-off ~14 days ahead, and heats when they are due.Where it appears: Dashboard → Reproductive calendar
Conception rate
Of the breeding services resolved in the last 12 months, the share that led to conception. A female counts as conceived if she became pregnant at any point (pregnant, calved or even aborted); only "not pregnant" counts as failed, and services still awaiting confirmation are excluded. Formula: conceived ÷ (conceived + failed).Where it appears: Dashboard → Fertility indicators
Calving interval
Average number of days between consecutive calvings of the same cow. The herd figure averages the intervals whose most recent calving falls in the last 12 months. The shorter it is, the more efficient the reproduction.Where it appears: Dashboard → Fertility indicators
Days open
Days from a calving to the first subsequent service that achieved conception. Cows still awaiting a successful service (open cycles) are excluded; the herd figure averages the completed cycles whose calving falls in the last 12 months.Where it appears: Dashboard → Fertility indicators

Flows

Reproductive cycle

  1. Open

    Empty, available for service

  2. Served

    Bred; awaiting confirmation (30-60 days)

  3. Pregnant

Pregnancy confirmed; keeps milking most of the way

  4. Dry-off

Milking stops ~60 days before calving

  5. Calving

The calf is born; it can be registered in the herd

  6. Milking

Back to milking and open again — the cycle restarts

Reproductive events

  1. Service

Natural mount or artificial insemination; the female becomes "served"

  2. Pregnancy check

Positive → "pregnant"; negative → back to "open"

  3. Calving

The calf is born; the cow starts lactating and is open again

  4. Abortion

Alternate branch: if the pregnancy is lost before calving, the cow returns to "open"

  5. Dry-off

Lactation branch: milking stops ~60 days before the expected calving

Reproductive calendar

  1. Service recorded

The mount or insemination is recorded; the female becomes "served"

  2. Expected calving computed

Service date + species gestation length = likely calving date

  3. Dry-off alert

Appears 60 days before the expected calving so milking stops on time

  4. Calving alert

Notices at 60, 30 and 7 days from the expected calving

  5. Record the calving

Recording the actual calving resolves the alert and the cycle restarts

Frequently asked questions

Can a cow be pregnant and milking at the same time?

Yes — it is the normal state of a productive cow. That is why Mi Finca handles them as two separate fields: reproductive status (open/served/pregnant) and lactation (milking/dry).

Why can’t I mark a male as served or milking?

Those statuses only apply to females. Males always stay as "open" and "dry" (neutral values).

What does it mean that a young milking cow counts as "in production"?

If she has already calved and is lactating, she is productive regardless of her age. Lactation takes priority over age in the classification.
